The University of St.Gallen: a fusion of tradition and zeitgeist
On 28 May 1898, the Parliament of the canton of St. Gallen decided to found "a school (acadamy) of higher learning for trade, transportation and administration". In 1994, the school was renamed the University of St.Gallen and abbreviated to "HSG". The acronym is an indication of the earlier names "Handels-Hochschule St.Gallen" (St.Gallen Trade University) and "Hochschule St.Gallen für Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften" (St.Gallen University for Economic and Social Sciences).
In 2001 we converted our courses to comply with the "Bologna" process. Our goal is to provide top-level dedication to teaching, research and further education.
Today’s HSG is geared to the future
HSG has local roots and enjoys international acclaim. We are contemporary, but look towards the future. As a university we enjoy immense prestige. We have made our name as a high-quality teaching and research institution with a focus on the real world. We are an important regional employer and play a crucial role in the Swiss economy.
