
1976
A new Funding Act introduces a gradual reduction of the financial responsibility on the Municipality of St.Gallen. Since 1984, the canton has had sole financial responsibility for the HSG.
1978
Introduction of an independent law course
1985
The blueprint for an extension with a new library and auditorium (architect: Bruno Gerosa) is approved in a referendum.
1987
After the postgraduate course in corporate management, an intensive course for managers in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) follows in 1988.
1989
The new University Act comes into force. The HSG is renamed the “University of St.Gallen Graduate School of Business, Economics, Law and Social Sciences” and its over 3,000 students receive a new library building.
1992
Construction starts on the Executive Campus Holzweid with the goal of relieving main university building.
1994
An amendment to the University Act entails the following changes: renaming of the university to “University of St.Gallen”, retaining the “HSG” abbreviation, a new appointment procedure for electing the board of governors by parliament and a redefinition of the appeals commission.
1995
In addition to inaugurating the executive campus, the University's name is changed again to "University of St.Gallen - Graduate School of Business, Economics, Law and Social Sciences (HSG)”.
2000
The new teaching concept embraces the Bologna reform. In the 2001/2002 Winter Semester, the first students begin their Bachelor’s and Master's degree courses. With its two-tier system, the HSG assumes a pioneering role within Switzerland.
2003
In the 2003/2004 Winter Semester, the HSG is the first university in Switzerland to add the Children’s University to its wide range of public programmes.
2004
The HSG receives AACSB accreditation on January 1. Together with the EQUIS accreditation, HSG now bears two important international seals of quality.
2005
The “HSG redevelopment, redesign and extension” project is approved. The goal: extensive redevelopment, modification of the infrastructure to suit the changes in education and increase its capacity in capacity from the previous 3,500 to 5,000 students. The Executive School for Management, Technology and Law (ES-HSG) opens, pooling its further education activities.
2006
The HSG alumni has over 16,000 members and celebrates its 75th anniversary. Introduction of the university-wide research focus “Work, ageing and welfare” and “Wealth and risk”, as well as the interdisciplinary co-operation centres.
2007
The HSG alumni advisory committee is born. It supports HSG in implementing its Vision 2010. Alumni and other personalities from business, politics and society contribute their expertise, tap into HSG networks and draft funding concepts for HSG projects.
2008
Opening of the HSG Executive Campus, an extension of the Holzweid executive campus, with an additional seminar wing and a new building accommodating 54 hotel rooms.
2010
Reopening of the renovated Main and Auxiliary Buildings. The HSG students are again able to use the Aula as well as the new Restaurant.
2011
The new University Statutes have entered into force, and the official designation of the University of St.Gallen has been updated to “University of St.Gallen - School of Management, Economics, Law, Social Sciences and International Affairs (HSG)”.
Reopening of the renovated and extended buildings of the University of St.Gallen. HSG students now have a new restaurant and a triple sports hall, and they are able to use the Aula again.

Extension of the campus by the building an Tellstrasse 2.
2017
Inauguration of the new teaching and research buildings at Müller-Friedberg-Strasse 6/8.
